My Running Cowl
As most of you know, this winter has been obscenely cold. With sub-zero temps and wind-chills I found training for the Pittsburgh marathon grueling! Scarves just don't keep my neck warm and they always fall down from protecting my chin! So I finally made myself a cowl that will keep my neck and chin warm in this super cold weather!
Here's the pattern!
It's made in a rib pattern because it is the warmest knitting stitch, as it holds pockets of warm air in the ribs.
The chimney shape paired with the super bulky yarn will stand up around my neck to protect my chin! I made it out of Schachenmayr Lumio yarn so if I run in the dark everyone can see me!
Sara's Running Cowl
Supplies
~About 79 yards super bulky yarn, such as Schachenmayr Lumio
~Size U.S. 15 needles
~Yarn needle with large eye (one large enough to accommodate your bulky yarn!)
Abbreviations:
co = cast on
k = knit
p = purl
m1k = make one knit. You can either knit into the front and the back of the stitch, or you can pick up the bar between the last stitch you worked, put it on your needle with the right side of the stitch facing you, and knit it through the back. Picture tutorial here!
m1p = make one purl. You can either purl into the front and the back of the stitch, or you can pick up the bar between the last stitch you worked, put it on your needle with the left side of the stitch facing you, and purl it like a normal stitch. Picture tutorial here!
w = (work) knit the knit stitches, purl the purl stitches
Pattern:
Co 41* stitches using long tail method.
Join to work in the round. *When joining, slip the last co stitch onto the new working needle so it is adjacent to the first co stitch and knit these two stitches together. This will help diminish the "gap" when joining! If you prefer to not do this, only co 40 stitches.
Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 10 rows or until your cowl is about the length of your neck.
Increase rows:
Row 11: *w10, m1p. Repeat from * to end of row. To m1p on the last stitch in the row, purl into the front and the back of the stitch. You only need to use this method once as you will only need to m1p on the last stitch one time (44 sts)
Row 12 and all even rows: work across
Row 13: w10, m1p, w11, m1p, w11, m1p, w11, m1p, p1 (48 sts)
Row 15: w10, m1k, w12, m1k, w12, m1k, w12, m1k, p2 (52 sts)
Row 17: w10, m1k, w13, m1k, w13, m1k, w13, m1k, k1, p2 (56 sts)
Bind off all live stitches and sew in your ends!
Happy Knitting!
